Global and National Theme: “One Tree, One Life. Restoring Our Forests for a Sustainable Future” Celebration of December 5, 2025 On December 5, 2025, the organization COSAWOH celebrated the International Tree Day in the territory of Walungu, chiefdom of Ngweshe, group of Ikoma, village Ngunjwe. This day, recognized worldwide, was placed under the international and national theme in the Democratic Republic of Congo: “One Tree, One Life. Restoring Our Forests for a Sustainable Future.” Actions Undertaken by COSAWOH • Establishment of nurseries: COSAWOH prepared nurseries of Greveria and Eucalyptus trees, intended for reforestation in areas affected by excessive tree cutting. • Collaborative reforestation: In partnership with the Kampuse Institute, more than 300 seedlings were planted to restore degraded lands. • Education and awareness: Students from the Kampuse Institute presented poems highlighting the benefits of trees and the importance of environmental protection. • Creation of a school brigade: A brigade was initiated to ensure the monitoring, watering, and growth of the young plants, thus contributing to the improvement of the local climate. Context and Challenges The city of Bukavu and its surroundings face strong pressure on forest resources: • Trees are regularly cut down for charcoal production and to supply construction sites. • The absence of reforestation practices worsens deforestation and weakens ecological balance. In response to this reality, COSAWOH and its partners emphasize that each tree planted is a promise of life, rainfall, and climate balance. Key Message The celebration of this day in Walungu illustrates COSAWOH’s commitment to the fight against deforestation. It highlights that community mobilization, youth education, and tree planting are essential pillars for building a sustainable future.
